Who Needs to Apply for ETIAS?

ETIAS is required for citizens of approximately 60 visa-exempt countries. If you currently travel to Europe without a visa, you will need ETIAS from Q4 2026. This includes travelers from the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and many more. Check the full eligible countries list to confirm your nationality.

EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens do not need ETIAS. Citizens of countries that already require a Schengen visa are also not affected — ETIAS only applies to visa-exempt nationalities.

What You Need Before You Apply

Gather these before starting your ETIAS application to avoid interruptions:

  • Valid passport — from an eligible country, valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned return date
  • Email address — your authorization will be sent here
  • Credit or debit card — to pay the €20 ETIAS fee
  • Personal details — full legal name, date of birth, nationality, home address
  • Travel details — first country of entry in Europe
  • Employment information — current job or student status

How to Apply for ETIAS — Step by Step

The ETIAS application process has 5 simple steps. Most applicants complete the entire process in under 10 minutes.

Step 1 — Go to the Official ETIAS Portal

Visit the official EU ETIAS application portal at travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. The system launches Q4 2026 and is available 24/7 from any device. Beware of third-party sites that charge inflated fees for the same application.

Step 2 — Fill in the Application Form

Complete the online form with your personal information, passport details, travel plans, and answer background security questions honestly. Use your full legal name exactly as it appears on your passport.

Step 3 — Review Everything Carefully

Double-check all entries before submitting. You cannot edit a submitted application — errors may require a new application and a second fee. Pay particular attention to your passport number and date of birth.

Step 4 — Pay the €20 Fee

Pay securely by credit or debit card. The ETIAS cost is €20 for adults aged 18–69. Travelers under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee. The fee is non-refundable even if your application is denied.

Step 5 — Receive Your Authorization

Most applications are approved automatically within minutes. In some cases additional review is needed — up to 4 days. Complex cases can take up to 30 days. Your approval is sent by email and linked digitally to your passport — no printout required.

ETIAS Fee Structure

The ETIAS application fee is straightforward:

  • Adults aged 18–69: €20 per person
  • Children under 18: Free (authorization still required)
  • Adults over 70: Free (authorization still required)
  • Family members of EU citizens: Free in certain circumstances

Each person needs their own individual application — you cannot apply for a family group in a single submission.

ETIAS Processing Time

Understanding ETIAS processing time helps you plan when to apply:

  • Most applications: Approved within minutes automatically
  • Some applications: Up to 96 hours (4 days) for manual review
  • Complex cases: Up to 30 days in rare circumstances

Apply at least 96 hours before your departure date to be safe. Applying weeks in advance is strongly recommended during peak travel seasons.

Tips for a Successful Application

  • Apply well in advance — at least 2 weeks before travel during busy periods
  • Use your full legal name exactly as on your passport
  • Answer all questions honestly — incorrect answers can lead to denial
  • Travel with the same passport used for the application
  • Save your email confirmation as digital proof
  • Check your email after submitting in case additional information is requested

What Happens After You Apply

Once approved, your ETIAS is electronically linked to your passport — there is no physical document or sticker. Border officials can see your authorization when they scan your passport at entry. Your ETIAS is valid for 3 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It covers unlimited trips within those 3 years, up to 90 days per stay in any 180-day period.

Can someone else apply for ETIAS on my behalf?

Yes. Family members, travel agents, or employers can apply on your behalf, but they need your full consent and all required information. The authorization is always issued in the traveler’s name and linked to their passport.

What if my ETIAS application is rejected?

You have the right to appeal the decision. Denial reasons are provided and you may be able to reapply with additional information. Alternatively, you can apply for a traditional Schengen visa through your country’s nearest EU embassy.

Can I travel immediately after applying?

Only once you receive your approval email. Do not book non-refundable travel before your ETIAS is confirmed. Apply early — most are approved within minutes but some take up to 4 days.

Do I need a new ETIAS if I get a new passport?

Yes. ETIAS is linked to your specific passport. If you renew your passport you must apply for a new ETIAS, even if the old one hasn’t expired yet.
