What exactly is ETIAS?

ETIAS — the European Travel Information and Authorisation System — is a new mandatory pre-travel screening program for travelers who currently enter the Schengen Area visa-free.

Similar to the US ESTA or Canadian eTA, it is not a visa. It's an electronic authorization you apply for online before travel. Most applications are approved within minutes.
